history
From 杜甫《陪李北海宴历下亭》(Du Fu, Tang, 745 CE), written at Lixia Pavilion during a banquet with the older poet and official 李邕 (Li Yong) in Jinan: 东藩驻皂盖，北渚凌清河。海右此亭古，济南名士多 (East vassal moors the black-canopied carriage; north islet surmounts the clear river. East of the sea, this pavilion is ancient; Jinan has many famous men). The couplet is inscribed in red on the gate of Jinan's Daming Lake (大明湖) and has become the city's official self-description.
usage
Almost always quoted as the couplet with 海右此亭古. 海右 = 'right of the sea,' the classical name for the Shandong region. 名士 = scholars/men of renown, not modern 'celebrities.'
