Per 《新华词典》, originally a sleeveless riding vest (便于服装). Tradition credits Empress Chabi of the Yuan with its design, and by the Ming it had become standard layered wear for women — worn open over 袄裙 or 襦裙, it became a key silhouette of Ming-style hanfu.
