history

Originally a sleeveless riding vest (便于骑射的服装). Tradition credits Empress Chabi of the Yuan with its design, and by the Ming it had become standard layered wear for women - worn open over 袄裙 or 襦裙, it became a key silhouette of Ming-style hanfu.
