history

Mao Zedong's 1956 poem 《水调歌头·游泳》 — 才饮长沙水，又食武昌鱼 — turned this Hubei bream into a national symbol. The fish itself is older: a Three Kingdoms ditty 《三国志·吴志》 'rather drink Jianye water than eat Wuchang fish' protested moving the Wu capital to Wuchang.
