history

Her husband 柳直荀 was killed in 1932. When she sent Mao a ci mourning him in 1957, he answered with one to the tune 蝶恋花, later titled 《答李淑一》, which sets her lost 柳 "willow" beside his lost 杨 "poplar", 杨开慧.
