惺惺作态

惺惺作態
xīngxīngzuòtài
idiom

Meanings

  1. 1 to put on an act
  2. 2 to feign emotion / sincerity
  3. 3 to be hypocritical and theatrical

Examples

Tā zài jìngtóu qián xīngxīngzuòtài, bèidì lǐ què shì lìng yī fù miànkǒng.
He puts on an act in front of the camera, but behind the scenes wears a completely different face.
Bié zài xīngxīngzuòtài le, shéi kàn bù chū nǐ shì zhuāng de?
Stop the act — who can't tell you're faking it?

Tips

usage
Strongly negative — used when someone's display of feeling (sympathy, modesty, righteousness) is judged to be theatrical and insincere. Note here means 'feigned / pretentious', not 'wise' (as in the unrelated phrase 惺惺相惜).
mistakes
Don't confuse with 惺惺相惜 (xīngxīngxiāngxī, 'kindred spirits cherish each other') — same character but opposite polarity. ('put on a pose') is what makes 惺惺作态 negative.
