Research requires both reading widely and thinking deeply — otherwise, learning without thinking leads to confusion and thinking without learning leads to peril.
Tips
history
Second half of Confucius' dictum in 《论语·为政》: 子曰:学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆 — 'To learn without reflecting is to be lost; to reflect without learning is to be in danger.' The two clauses name the symmetrical failure modes of the mind. Always quoted as a pair in educational discourse.
usage
Paired couplet — typically cited alongside 学而不思则罔. 殆 here means peril / precarious, a classical sense; it also survives in modern 危殆 (critical, at risk).
