Playing Qianlong in 《还珠格格》 (1998) and 《铁齿铜牙纪晓岚》 earned him the nickname 皇阿玛, 'Imperial Father', which is what the princesses call the emperor in the first show. With 张国立 and 王刚 he formed the 'iron triangle' of Qing court dramas.
