Guangxi became an autonomous region for the Zhuang (壮族) — China's largest ethnic minority — in 1958. Short name 桂 (Guì), from 桂林 the historic prefecture. Bordering Vietnam to the southwest, it is famous for karst scenery (Guilin, Yangshuo) and for the annual 三月三 (Sān Yuè Sān) Zhuang song festival.
