Best known from 李商隐's 巴山夜雨涨秋池 'night rain on the Ba hills swells the autumn pools'. 巴 was an ancient state in this region, and to Tang poets 巴山楚水 'the hills of Ba and the rivers of Chu' meant remote, bleak country far from the capital.
