Her given name 呦呦 comes from the Shijing line '呦呦鹿鸣,食野之蒿' — 'the deer call yōu-yōu, feeding on wild wormwood'. The wormwood (蒿) in the poem is the same plant family from which she later isolated artemisinin (青蒿素) — a fitting coincidence.
