Her given name 呦呦 comes from the Shijing line "呦呦鹿鸣，食野之蒿" - "the deer call yōu-yōu, feeding on wild wormwood". The wormwood (蒿) in the poem is the same plant family from which she later isolated artemisinin (青蒿素) - a fitting coincidence.
