Borobudur (
婆罗浮屠) was built around 800 CE under the Sailendra dynasty in central Java. The name is transliterated from Sanskrit-Old Javanese 'Vihara Buddha Uhr' (Buddha-monastery on the hill). The structure is a giant stone mandala — pilgrims walk a spiral path past 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues, ascending symbolically from the realm of desire to nirvana.
