The expression 抓小辫子 (zhuā xiǎobiànzi, 'to grab someone's little braid') dates from when Qing dynasty men wore the characteristic queue hairstyle. Grabbing someone's braid meant catching them — metaphorically catching them in a fault or wrongdoing.
