The first book of 金庸's Condor Trilogy, followed by 神雕侠侣 and 倚天屠龙记; fans call it 射雕 for short. The 1983 Hong Kong TV series with 黄日华 and 翁美玲 is the best remembered of its many versions.

射 'to shoot' + 雕 'eagle': the title echoes 毛泽东's line on Genghis Khan, 只识弯弓射大雕 'knew only how to bend his bow and shoot great eagles'. The hero 郭靖 grows up among the Mongols and once brings down two eagles with a single arrow.
