Tips

history
The king asks 宋玉 why people speak ill of him. He answers with a story: when a singer in the capital 郢 sang the folk tune 下里巴人, thousands joined in, but for 阳春白雪 only a few dozen could. The loftier the song, the fewer can follow, and the same is true of a man of rare conduct.
culture
The story gave Chinese three idioms: 阳春白雪 for refined art, 下里巴人 for popular art, and 曲高和寡 for work too lofty to find an audience.
