Borrowed from Japanese otaku (お宅), 宅 came to mean 'shut-in / indoor type' in Chinese. 宅女 (female) and 宅男 (male) describe people who order in, game, watch anime or dramas, and rarely go out. Used self-deprecatingly, rarely as an insult.
