大庆

Oil was struck here in September 1959, just before the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic, so the field was named 大庆, 'great celebration'. In the 1960s the slogan 工业学大庆, 'in industry, learn from Daqing', and the driller Wang Jinxi (王进喜), the 'Iron Man', made it a national model.

usage

As an ordinary word 大庆 still means a grand celebration of an anniversary, such as a school's hundredth. The official name of the city is 大庆市.
