Tips
usage
Most characters are 形声字 (phono-semantic compounds): a 形旁 gives the meaning and a 声旁 the sound. In 河 'river', 氵 means water and 可 gives the sound. Sounds have drifted over the centuries, so a 声旁 is a hint, not a rule: 可 is kě but 河 is hé.
