The name is Turkic for 'stone fortress', after the ruined fortress that still stands by the town. The county is often shortened to 塔县.
culture
Most of China's Tajiks (塔吉克族) live here. The county borders Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the Karakoram Highway crosses into Pakistan at the 红其拉甫 (Khunjerab) Pass.
