history

Originally called 鸡笼 (Jīlóng, 'chicken coop') — a folk-etymology rendering of an indigenous Ketagalan name. Renamed 基隆 ('foundation prosperity', same pinyin) in 1875 by the Qing for better connotations. Famous for its rainy weather and the Miaokou (庙口) night market.
