China formally launched its national park system in 2021 with a first batch of five: 三江源, 大熊猫, 东北虎豹, 海南热带雨林, and 武夷山. Prior to 2021, land conservation used different categories like 自然保护区 and 风景名胜区.
usage
国家公园 is the direct calque of "national park" and works for both Chinese and foreign parks (黄石国家公园 = Yellowstone). Don't confuse with 国家森林公园 (National Forest Park), which is a separate, older, looser designation.
