Grandson of Sima Yi (司马懿), the Cao Wei strategist. Sima Yan forced the last Wei emperor to abdicate in 265, then conquered Eastern Wu in 280 to end the Three Kingdoms era. His later reign grew complacent and his dynasty collapsed into the War of the Eight Princes () within a generation.
