In the 《
韩非子》 story he offers the stone to two kings in turn. Each has a jade worker look at it, is told it is a plain stone, and has one of Bian He's feet cut off for lying. Under the third king he weeps at the foot of the mountain for three days and nights, not for his feet, he says, but because a gem is called a stone and an honest man a liar. The king has the stone cut open and names the jade after him:
和氏璧.
