华西 refers roughly to the upper Yangtze region and Sichuan. It became a recognized brand through West China Union University (
华西协合大学), founded in Chengdu in 1910 by American, British, and Canadian missionaries; its medical school later became the renowned
华西医学中心 at Sichuan University. Today many Chengdu institutions still carry the
华西 prefix.
