The term combines
华 (splendor) and
夏 (the Xia dynasty, ~2070–1600 BCE, China's legendary first dynasty). It became the self-designation of the Central Plains peoples vs. the surrounding
夷 (barbarians), and today functions as a poetic, culturally-loaded name for China — the equivalent of saying 'Albion' for Britain.
