mistakes
The tone on the first syllable decides which word this is. 分子 is a molecule or the top number of a fraction. With a fourth tone, 分子 is a different word meaning a member of a group, as in 知识分子, an intellectual.
usage
In maths this is the top half of a fraction, sitting over 分母. In chemistry it is the smallest unit of a substance that still behaves like that substance, which is where 分子式, molecular formula, comes from.
