凌空 has both literal and athletic uses. Literally: birds, planes, or bridges 'riding high above'. In football and volleyball commentary it's the standard term for a mid-air strike:
凌空抽射 (volley shot),
凌空一脚 (a flying kick / volley). The
凌 here means 'to ride / mount over', not 'to bully'.
