culture
The five are 不杀生 (no killing), 不偷盗 (no stealing), 不邪淫 (no sexual misconduct), 不妄语 (no lying) and 不饮酒 (no alcohol). They are the vows of lay followers; monks and nuns keep a far longer list of 戒律 (precepts).
usage
You 受 (receive) the precepts when you take them and 持 (keep) them afterwards: 受五戒, 持五戒. Breaking one is 破戒.
