九层塔 ('nine-tier pagoda') refers to Asian basil - the name comes from the way its flower spike forms stacked tiers. It is the essential herb in Taiwanese 三杯鸡 and in many Hakka and Southeast Asian stir-fries. In northern Mandarin the European herb is usually just called 罗勒.
