郭茂倩 in the Northern Song, it gathers songs of the Han-dynasty Music Bureau (
乐府) and later poems written in their style, sorted into 12 categories by the kind of music they were sung to. It preserves famous anonymous ballads such as
木兰辞 'The Ballad of Mulan'.
