The city was called
香山 (Xiangshan, 'Fragrant Mountain') until 1925, when it was renamed
中山 in honor of
孙中山 (Sun Yat-sen), who was born here in
翠亨村 (Cuiheng Village) in 1866. It is one of the only prefecture-level cities in China named after a person.
