history
China named the seas by direction: 南洋 for South-East Asia, 西洋 for Europe and the Americas, and 东洋 for Japan. The word sounds old-fashioned now and lives on in period words such as 东洋车 'rickshaw', which came from Japan, and the wartime slur 东洋鬼.
usage
In Japanese, 東洋 (tōyō) means the East or the Orient as a whole, as opposed to the West; Chinese uses 东方 for that.
