Tips

usage
Scholars prefer 上座部 to 小乘 'Lesser Vehicle', a name that began as a put-down by the 大乘 (Mahayana) schools. 上座 translates Sanskrit sthavira, 'elder'. Theravada is the Buddhism of Sri Lanka and mainland Southeast Asia; Chinese, Japanese and Korean Buddhism are Mahayana.
