history

Founded 1924 on Changzhou Island near Guangzhou, the 黄埔军校 (Whampoa Military Academy) was jointly backed by the KMT and CCP during the First United Front. Its first commandant was Chiang Kai-shek and its political department was headed by Zhou Enlai — graduates led armies on both sides of the Chinese Civil War.
