Tips

history
The Han imperial catalogue describes its author only as a man of 楚 who lived deep in the mountains and wore a cap of 鹖 feathers, the plumes of a fierce pheasant also worn by soldiers; nothing else is known of him. Long dismissed as a later forgery, the book was taken seriously again after silk manuscripts found at 马王堆 in 1973 turned out to share many passages and ideas with it.
culture
Its chapter 环流 'Circular Flow' says 物极则反 'when things reach their extreme they turn back', an early form of the idiom 物极必反. The same chapter tells the seasons by the direction in which the handle of the Big Dipper points.
