A neutral collective term for wild animals, without the menace English "beasts" carries. 禽 is birds, still alive in 家禽 (poultry) and 禽流感 (bird flu); 兽 is four-legged animals, as in 野兽 and 兽医 (a vet).
history
The pairing goes back to a Han-dynasty rhapsody on the Lingguang Palace, describing carved birds and animals that seem to take their shape from the timber they are cut from.
