韵文 (verse) and
散文 (sǎnwén, prose) are the two main genre categories in classical Chinese literary studies.
韵文 covers anything with rhyme or fixed metrical structure —
诗 (shī, classical poetry),
词 (cí, lyric poetry),
曲 (qǔ, drama songs), and
赋 (fù, rhyme-prose). Modern free verse blurs the line.
