Who hasn't read the histories of old? Today's deeds outshine the ancients'.
Tips
history
Literally 'green history'. Before paper, scribes recorded events on strips of green bamboo (青竹简) — so 青史 came to mean 'the historical record'. The fixed phrase 名垂青史 (míngchuíqīngshǐ, 'name hangs in the green annals') means 'to go down in history'.
register
Strongly literary. Reserved for solemn or rhetorical contexts — speeches, eulogies, and historical writing. Don't use it for ordinary 'history' (use 历史 instead).
