As a writer, Ah Cheng (
钟阿城) is famous for his 1984 novella 《
棋王》 ('The Chess Master'), a landmark of xungen ('root-seeking') literature drawing on Daoist thought. He later worked as a screenwriter, including on Chen Kaige's 《
孩子王》 (King of the Children, 1987).
