As a writer, Ah Cheng (钟阿城) is famous for his 1984 novella 棋王 (The Chess Master), a landmark of root-seeking literature drawing on Daoist thought. He later worked as a screenwriter, including on Chen Kaige's 孩子王 (King of the Children, 1987).
