At Mid-Autumn Festival people go to see the tidal bore on the Qiantang River.
Tips
culture
The full name is 钱塘江 (Qiántángjiāng). Its bore tide 钱塘江潮 (Qiántáng cháo) - a surging tidal wave up to 9m high - is one of the world's largest river bores. Best viewed around the Mid-Autumn Festival (Aug 18 lunar) near Haining, a tradition going back to the Southern Song dynasty.
usage
钱江 is the common short name for the river (appearing in place names like 钱江新城, 钱江大桥, 钱江通道). The full 钱塘江 is preferred in formal writing.
