Its tidal bore, 钱塘江大潮, can rise several metres and is best seen around the 18th day of the eighth lunar month (八月十八潮) at 海宁. Crowds have gathered to watch it since at least the Song dynasty.

钱塘 was an old name for Hangzhou, and the province 浙江 takes its name from the river's ancient name. The short form is 钱江.
