history
From 柳永《望海潮·东南形胜》(Liu Yong, Northern Song, ~1003–1010), a long cí describing Hangzhou (钱塘 = the old name, after the Qiantang River): 东南形胜，三吴都会，钱塘自古繁华。烟柳画桥，风帘翠幕，参差十万人家 (The southeast's finest terrain, the metropolis of the Three Wu — Qiantang has flourished from of old. Mist-wrapped willows, painted bridges, gauze curtains and green awnings, a hundred thousand households rank on rank). A legend claims the Jin ruler Wanyan Liang read this cí and was inspired to invade the Southern Song to possess Hangzhou.
usage
钱塘 is a literary/historical name for Hangzhou (and for the Qiantang River, famous for its tidal bore). The line is often inscribed on Hangzhou tourism materials and stamps.
