邓析 (died 501 BC), an official of Zheng in the Spring and Autumn period, took up lawsuits for a fee, argued either side of a case and wrote a penal code of his own on bamboo, the
竹刑. The state put him to death and then adopted his code. He is counted a forerunner of the
名家 School of Names, but the two surviving chapters were probably put together later under his name.
