More formal/academic than 词 (cí, 'word') alone — typical of dictionary titles, linguistics texts, and writing-craft discussions. In ordinary conversation 词 or 词语 are far more common.
mistakes
Don't confuse with 语词 's near-twin 词语 (cíyǔ). They overlap heavily in the meaning 'words and phrases'; 词语 is the everyday term, 语词 leans bookish.
