Fossils first described in 1934 from India's Siwalik Hills and named after the Hindu god Rama (
腊玛 is the phonetic transcription). Long claimed as a direct human ancestor, but 1980s molecular-clock studies reclassified it as a relative of Sivapithecus in the orangutan lineage.
