脊 is pronounced jǐ (3rd tone), not jí or jī. This is one of the most commonly mispronounced characters in Chinese.

脊椎动物 (jǐzhuī dòngwù) = vertebrate, 无脊椎动物 (wú jǐzhuī dòngwù) = invertebrate. 脊椎 refers to the whole spine; individual bones are 椎骨 (zhuīgǔ).
