The name
肇庆 ("auspicious beginning") was bestowed in 1118 by Song emperor Huizong, who had held the title Prince of Duan here before taking the throne. Later, Jesuit Matteo Ricci set up his first China mission here in 1583 — producing the first European-style world map in Chinese.
