history
李淑一, a Changsha teacher and friend of Mao's wife 杨开慧, sent him a poem in 1957 mourning her husband 柳直荀, killed in 1932. Mao replied with this ci, in which the two dead rise to the moon, where 吴刚 offers them osmanthus wine and 嫦娥 dances for them.
usage
It is cited with its tune name: 蝶恋花·答李淑一. The opening line puns on the two surnames: Mao lost his 'proud poplar' (杨), she her 'willow' (柳).
