Tips

usage
Lives almost exclusively in 皲裂 (chapped / cracked, of skin). You'll see it in winter pharmacy aisles, hand-cream labels, and the famous opening of 宋濂's 《送东阳马生序》足肤皲裂而不知 ('my feet chapped without my noticing'), a standard high-school classical text.
mistakes
Two near-synonyms for chapped skin: 皲裂 and 皴裂. Medical and classical texts prefer 皲裂; colloquial / consumer-product copy tends toward 皴裂. Mainland simplification accepts both; you also occasionally see the variant 龟裂 with the same reading.

Components

radical
skin; surface
Right (skin) is the indexing radical (Kangxi #107). It puts in the skin-condition family alongside (chapped) and (wrinkled).
phonetic
jūn
army (here phonetic)
Left supplies the exact reading. Purely phonetic — the 'army' meaning has nothing to do with skin; the character was simply borrowed for its sound.
