Wang Dao engineered the Jin court's flight south after the fall of Luoyang (永嘉之乱, 311 CE) and stabilized Sima Rui as Emperor Yuan in Jiankang (modern Nanjing). The proverb 王与马，共天下 ('the Wangs and the Simas share the realm') captures the Wang clan's power during his lifetime.
